Hello,

Greece is beautiful, as most of the countries you will visit. The scenery is beautiful, people are friendly and helpful. Hospitality is weel known around Greece, especially in villages and away from big cities.
Note that the roads are not flat, you will meet many uphills along your ride in Greece.
Akrokorinthos is great to visit by bicycle, a local cycling team there may give you a "tour_around_Korinth"
[see some photos of the Korinth team in this thread:
http://www.cyclist-friends.gr/showthread.php?54745-%CE%9C%CE%B9%CE%B1-%C...
"Marevit" / Marinos, is the founder and leader of the team, a strong cyclist, he will give you a very warm welcome if you go there, I am sure about it]

Motorists in Greece do not "see" us. Some may be rude or dangerous. But if you take care and you are an experienced cyclist (and you are) you will not have many problems. Ofcource you will have to stay away from New_National_Roads in Greece.

I am sure you will find descriptions and blogs from other foreign cyclists that have travelled around Greece.

Best of luck....
Petros

Hi Petros,
Not knowing greek makes it hard to register for the cyclist-friends.gr forum.. I can't answer the security question as it is not translated well by google translate.. :-(

Anyway, I have seen photos of Korinth. Looks like a lovely place! :-)

I tried it, and it is really difficult for any non-Greek. You have to type the security answer in Greek.....

Try contacting them in this form:
http://www.cyclist-friends.gr/sendmessage.php

After you complete registration, you will see an English speaking section. There you can find many helpful Greek cyclists, like in this forum.

Hope this helps.

I'm now moving on to the further planning of my bike route from Holland to Australia. I have worked out a basis route for Asia. I have quite a lot of spare time on this route, and am looking at doing some detours in Turkey, Iran and the Caucus. Looking forward to the trip! :-)

Hey Matthew, i'll venture a suggestion about Turkey. I have cycled all across, the Black Sea Coast (Blue Sea, it should be named rather) and the central 'deserts', and the west coast.

The Black Sea coast is ideal for a recreation style of traveling.
The central Anatolia is ideal for scenery, landscapes, natural monuments.
The west coast is ideal for civilization, history, archeological sites, being a semantic place for the ionian civilization, and after that the greek one, and after that the western.

Since you will start fresh after a good break from Istanbul, and, wisely enough, you will take your time, if i were you i would choose to head south from Istanbul, do the west coast (visiting archeological sites), visit Ierapolis or Pamukkale (don't miss that one!), head east for Sagalassos and the Lake District, and then head east to Erzurum through the amazing Cappadocia desert. And if i had extra time, i would take extra trips to two amazing cities who lie close to the Black Sea coast, Safranbolu and Amasya.

Taking your time is yout best bet anyway, you know that already!... :-)

HI there. Yes. The west coast sounds lovely. Would you then go halfway down the west coast, and then leave it to go to Pamukkale and then Cappadoccia?

I will also have time before arriving in Istanbul at the end of this year. I am thinking of cycling down to Athens, catching a boat to Chios, and cycling up the western Turkish coast to Istanbul. If I do that this year, then next year I could head straight down to Cappadoccia. Lots of choices.. hehe

Thanks for your help!

Hi all,
It is getting nearer to my departure from Holland to Australia. I'm leaving September 13. I have been continuing with my preparations - doing a bike maintenance course, getting my vaccinations and other stuff. I have also been continuing planning my route to Australia. Now I have the part in south-east Asia planned.

Looking forward to seeing some of you on the trip!

Hi all,
I am now considering a longer route through Greece on my bike trip from Holland to Australia. I will have a lot of time to get to Istanbul, and would like to spend more time in Greece, cycling down to Athens.
What do you think of my planned alternative route?:
http://arctic-cycler.com/2014/06/16/world-cycle-longer-route-through-greece/

I could even cycle through Crete and Rhodos, but am not sure if the boats are running in November between Athens and Crete, Crete and Rhodos, and then Rhodos and Turkey.

All suggestions welcome!

Thanks!

Greetings, boats run all year long and I think for Crete
and Rhodes they run seven days a week but check it out.

Crete is a unique place, it is a small world and a mere
15 days would not do her justice. To put it into propor-
tion, on a 8 day summer vacation I usually drive 1.500km
and this is only for 1/4 of Crete, only one of the four
municipalities. Imagine that I have visited Chania (left
edge of Crete) twice (15day, 3500km) and I have missed
a lot...

If your days are limited I would suggest exploring either
the left side (Chania) or the right side (Lasithi). There
are mountain, gorges, lakes, seas, villages, caves and
whatever you can think of.

Be very very very aware of the cars. Many cyclists have
died in Crete.
---

Rhodes is a more viable option, again lots of sights but
in a smaller scale.

Hi there. Thanks for the tips. Crete sounds like a lovely place to visit. I certainly won't have a whole month to explore it, though.. I will have to consider what to see.
But, just on a logistical standpoint, where can I find out about boats from Athens - Crete, and then to Rhodos, and then, importantly, on to Turkey? I want to continue on straight from Rhodos to Turkey. Is this possible even in the winter? If it is not, I might have to stick to other parts of Greece that have boat connections to Turkey, or, indeed, not catch a boat and cycle via Thessaloniki.

Thanks for your help!!

check this site for all Greece's ferry trips, it's quite accurate
www.gtp.gr

and then from Rhodes to Marmaris , I found this one
http://www.marmarisferry.com/index_en.php

Of course there are ferries also in the winter .

I believe that the idea of island hopping is better .

have fun.

You might think of Greece as having two poles, the north one -northwest and central mountan regions- and the south one -Peloponnese and Crete. The part inbetween is quite 'normal', but those two are two new different worlds open to the traveller. So, if you are interested for relaxing and nature, pick the first, if for civilization and human experiences, pick the latter. In the beginning of a trip like yours, i would venture to pass the mainland fast and save time for Crete and go around there as much i could, Matthew, i think you would not regret for that, and boats are there all year long for the west coast of Turkey every few days at least.

Hi there.
Thanks for the links. As far as I can see, almost all boats between Greece and Turkey stop on 31 October or earlier. I checked on the www.gtp.gr website, and the only ferry I found between Turkey and Greece is from Chios.
Crete sounds wonderful, but, I am not sure I can get from there (via other islands possibly) to Turkey. Maybe I will stick to Peloppese - also part of 'south Greece'.. :-)

Thanks for the tips!!

Hi there.
Only two months to go before I leave Holland and start my cycle trip to Australia, passing though Greece..

A week ago I went on a test ride with all my equipment in France. It was good I did, as I need to get some repairs done. Anyway, it was a great trip cycling down to Limoges, where I spent 3 months in 1988-89. I also made a little video of the trip.

Take a look at my blog..

I'm looking forward to seeing some of you in Greece!

Hi all,
On my bike trip of 36000km from Holland to Australia through Greece, I'll be meeting people. I will observe, and I will write. What are the sustainability issues people face across my path, and how do they deal with them? Who are the people? What are their stories? I will also support Green Pedals to promote this dialogue, and use to realise sustainable infrastructure in selected schools on my route.

Take a look at my blog entry on Green Pedals: http://arctic-cycler.com/2014/08/18/green-pedals/

Holland to Australia by bike. Day 1.
The day was surreal. Escorted by a mass of friends to the Belgian border, we sat in the sun, fearing the moment of our ways diverging. Then welcomed by more friends on arrival in Schimmert - with the Dutch flag and a glass of champagne. I still haven't fathomed everything. That will come.

Holland to Australia by bike. Day 2.
The pressure and stress of the last week was released like air escaping from a balloon. A short ride through familiar territory with Ed and Frank to Aachen before a relaxing in the beautiful thermal baths in Aachen.

Kolle Allaaf! Διαβάστε το blog μου.

Day 3. World cycle from Holland to Australia.
An eery silence standing above the empty freeway, a lone bird squawking in the distance. Standing under the ever impressive twin peaks of the Cologne cathedral, waiting for the journalist to arrive. And catching up with old friends, in Aachen and Cologne. Kölle Allaaf! Read my blog.

From Holland to Australia by bike. Day 6. Koblenz - Limburg.
I woke to rain, and the rain remained looming all day. But the sun poked out too as I cycled along the beautiful Lahn valley, endowed with steep wooded sides and pretty villages.
